Upload

When you've finished modifying your site, you can upload it to the web server using the upload tab. Once you've entered (and saved) the server information, all you need to do is type your password and press upload. Synthesis keeps track of what needs updating, and only the changed files are moved. Linked files, such as graphics and JavaScript, are transferred as well.

Uploading changed pages to the web server. This automated process moves only the files it needs to, so you'll be finished in no time.

The Upload Module uses the standard FTP protocol which is available on most servers. If your server does not support FTP, then you won't be able to use this module.

Configuration

Before the first transfer you'll need to enter, and save, your configuration settings. After that all you need to do is type in your password and press the Upload button. This information can be obtained from your webmaster, or whoever is hosting your site. Here is what you need to know:

Server Name
The name of the FTP server you're connecting to. A typical value would be: ftp.your-domain.com.
User Name
The user name used to log into on the FTP server.
Server Directory
If you need to load your site files somewhere other than where you log on to the server, that directory path goes here.
Server Port
The FTP port to use. The typical setting is 21, and it's unlikely to be anything else.

After entering this information, press the Save Settings button: so you won't have to enter it again.

Upload Files

Once you've entered (and saved) the server information, all you need to do is type your password and press the Upload Site button . Your password won't be shown on the screen other than as ***. You'll need to type this in the first time you do an upload during a session. The value will not be stored between sessions for security reasons.

The first upload may take some time, as Synthesis will upload all of the files in your site. Subsequent updates will be much faster, as Synthesis keeps track of what needs updating, and only the changed files are moved. Linked files, such as graphics and JavaScript, are transferred as well.

Cleanup

You can remove old files from your website by pressing the Cleanup Button: . This operation searches the site's directory tree, and remove files that are not linked any longer. At this time, this is limited to Graphics, Style Sheets, and JavaScript files.
